The Chery Tiggo X7 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is the first in a line of the Chinese firm’s more premium-focused ‘X’ models, and is expected to go on sale in the UK soon, given the success of the Chery-owned Omoda and Jaecoo brands here.

Chery’s Tiggo X family of cars was created to rival the likes of Volkswagen and Toyota, and its soft roader character is aimed to appeal more to ‘lifestyle’-focused customers than the regular Tiggo range.

Chery Tiggo X7 design and practicality

A boxy design and a raised ride height are key to the X7’s outdoorsy aspirations, as is the Toyota 4Runner-esque grille, body-coloured grille insert, and matte black grille surround. The matching seven-spoke greyscale alloys and chunky off-road tyres add a sense of ruggedness previously unseen on Chery models.

This adventure-focused aesthetic is further enhanced by additional matte back body cladding on the bumpers and wheel arches, along with flurouscent yellow tow hooks at the bottom of the bumper.

Around the back, the full-widht lightbar found on the closely related, recently-facelifted Tiggo 7 has been ditched in favour of two vertical tail-lights either side of the boot.

The Chery X7’s off-road inspired look isn’t just show thanks to six off-road-specific drive modes: Snow, Mud, Sand, Rocks, and Water Wading. These point to a potential all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain. The Chery X7’s towing capacity is 1,300kg.

Chery has yet to confirm images of the X7’s cabin, but reports suggest that it will adopt a similar setup to its Tiggo 7 sibling with a landscape touchscreen mounted in the centre of the dashboard, a digital driver’s binnacle, and electric seat controls on the door.

EV Powered has contacted Chery for clarification on the Tiggo X7’s interior design, and is currently awaiting a response.

Chery Tiggo X7 powertrain

Like the standard Chery Tiggo 7 plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the X7 is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to an 18.4kWh battery. The system produces 201bhp and an electric only range of 55.9 miles.

Again, Chery has yet to confirm the powertrain, but given its relation to the regular Tiggo 7, this would be a logical progression given that it aims to offer each one of its models as a PHEV in the future.

Should the Tiggo X7 make it to the UK, it is likely to be adapted for the right-hand-drive market at the Chinese firm’s new R&D centre at the UTAC Millbrook testing ground in Bedfordshire. The site tunes Chery’s UK cars’ steering, chassis set-ups, and ADAS systems to local market tastes and road conditions.

Chery Tiggo X7 pricing

The Chery Tiggo 7 is priced from £29,995 in regular guise, suggesting that UK X7 buyers would face a slight premium.
